Don't miss the music! It's heaven sent! Choirs from five Howard County churches — Bethel Baptist, Bethany United Methodist, Glenelg United Methodist, Glen Mar United Methodist and Linden-Linthicum United Methodist — and the Lyric Brass Quintet of Baltimore will unite their voices and musical talent on behalf of the American Cancer Society at a benefit concert.

The event is Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m., at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City. There will be no cover charge; however, a free will offering will be taken. Light refreshments will follow the concert. For more information, call 410-531-2324.

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a Sports Youth Dance for ages 9-15, on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road.

Tickets are available at the door for $10 per person with a maximum of 200 tickets sold. Food and beverages, which include pizza, corn dogs, pretzels, nachos, candy, water and sodas, will also be for sale at the dance.

The department does have a "no exceptions" policy on appropriate behavior and dress code for its youth dances, and also enforces a strict adult sign-in/sign-out procedure for attendance. For more information, call 410-761-6633 and select option 5 or go to http://www.ElkridgeVFD.org.

Please don't grow weary of this plea, as I will remind everyone week to week about the growing population of those in need right here in our own neighborhoods. With the arrival of Thanksgiving next week and the holidays looming, please remember those who have little or nothing.

The EVFD's 22nd annual Holiday Food Drive is underway and monetary donations are greatly appreciated as they put together baskets of food to make the holidays a little brighter for those dealing with job loss, illness, homelessness and abandonment. Checks should be made out to the EVFD, and can be mailed to 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge 21075.

Donations of perishable and non-perishable foods can be brought to the station or given to Santa and Mrs. Claus on their annual neighborhood fire truck visits.

If you have any questions or need assistance with pick-up, contact Joe Slavotinek at 410-984-1796. Thank you for your kindness and generosity on behalf of those most in need.

The Community Action Council, in partnership with Wegmans, will hold its 8th annual Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution for eligible Howard County families in need on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Families will receive a turkey and other Thanksgiving food items such as yams, apples, green beans, potatoes, cranberry sauce and stuffing mix. The event will be held at St. John Baptist Church, 9055 Tamar Drive, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The CAC provides programs and emergency services for the low-income population of Howard County in order to alleviate the effects of poverty and to promote self-reliance. Families eligible to participate in the Thanksgiving program must have received assistance from CAC in the last year, as well as a numbered flyer for the event. For more information, contact the council at 410-313-6440.

Glen Mar United Methodist Church will hold its 5th annual Walk to Bethlehem on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2, from 5 to 8 p.m., 4701 New Cut Road in Ellicott City. The public can drop in anytime between these hours; allow yourself approximately 60 minutes to see the wondrous Christmas story. The event is free.

For more information, go to http://www.glenmarumc.org or call 410-465-4995 ext. 204.

While doing all that delicious holiday shopping, don't forget that the Elkridge Food Pantry drop box is conveniently located just past the cashiers at Green Valley Marketplace. If you can, pick up a few extra non-perishable items for the box, and the good folks at the food pantry will see that your generosity is shared with local families that are most in need.

Please keep in touch and let me know what you'd like to share in this space. Happy Thanksgiving!
