National Night Out is on the move for two Carroll County communities this year — Westminster and Eldersburg.
The event, which brings citizens and members of local law enforcement agencies together, promises fun, food and entertainment on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
"It's a night for everybody to get together," said Ellen Dix, president of the Freedom Area Citizen's Council and organizer for the Eldersburg-area National Night Out. "It's totally free. It costs nothing yet you have a good night out with the family."
Previously held at Carrolltown Center, Eldersburg's National Night Out will be held at Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department on Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m. The move gives the celebration a larger space and more visibility.
"You'll see it just like the carnival," Dix said. "It will be better. You won't be standing on hot blacktop but on grass, and they do have some covered pavilions."
Everyone attending Eldersburg's event will receive a free raffle ticket for gift cards from local South Carroll businesses. A live band will provide music and there will be free popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones, as well as free iced coffee from Starbucks. For more substantial fare, the fire department will be offering food for sale.
Meanwhile, in Westminster, Dutterer's Park will be a new location for the event, taking the place of the downtown PNC parking lot.
"The most important thing is the change of location. It was in a parking lot," said Susan Burk, chair of the event for the Junior Woman's Club of Westminster. "We're worried people show up at the wrong location."
The event at Dutterer's will feature a disc jockey, free ice pops and cake. Local organization, including McDaniel College and the SAFE Kids program, will have tables set up to hand out information.
The park is one of five locations overall in Westminster where National Night Out will be observed. Susie Coursey, a volunteer for Eagleview Homeowners Association's National Night Out celebration, said there will be free grilled hot dogs, chips and cold water and soda, as well as games and giveaways at the event.
"It's a fun night," Coursey said. "The neighbors get to see everyone. Everyone is welcome."
