UCF president John Hitt said at a recent pep rally the next goal for the Knights football team was a national championship.

Well, UCF brought home a football national championship recently – though maybe not the one Hitt was referring to when he made his comments last week.

The Knights’ women’s flag football team won a National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association championship at the University of West Florida in Pensacola in early January. UCF defeated Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico, 27-0.

The Knights’ representative – a team called Check On It – brought home the silverware for UCF on the gridiron. No clarity yet on whether a win over a Mexican team makes it an (unofficial, at least) international intramural championship.

Maybe this bodes well for Hitt’s vision of a football national championship in the future for the Knights – who earned their first-ever top-10 ranking after a 52-42 Fiesta Bowl victory over Baylor on New Year’s Day.
