Oviedo defensive end Tyree Owens has narrowed his college list to Georgia Tech, Iowa State and West Virginia. He will annnounce his decision live via Sentinel YouTube webcast Monday (July 29) at 7:30 p.m. (CHRIS HAYS/ORLANDO SENTINEL)
Owens, who is visiting West Virginia this weekend, will announce his decision live Monday at 7 p.m., via Orlando Sentinel YouTube webcast at this link.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Owens, who is ranked No. 4 in the Sentinel’s 2014 Central Florida Super60 and No. 50 in the Sentinel’s 2014 Florida Top 100, has shown loyalty to the first two schools that offered him in West Virginia, which was his first offer, and Georgia Tech.
He talked about his final three schools on Friday:
Georgia Tech: “It’s not just about football with them and they really talk to me about academics and everything else, too. It’s really close to home and so my mom would be able to come see me play a lot more and I have family in Atlanta, some cousins there. They have an amazing opportunity for education and it’s also a great team with great coaches.
Iowa State: “I haven’t been there but it’s a great team with some good coaches and it’s a Big 12 school. They’re doing some good things there.”
West Virginia: “I loved the atmosphere and the town of Morgantown right when I got here. From the first time I walked into the stadium I could just feel it. It’s a great place and the academics are great and the coaches are great people, too.”
As a junior, Owens had 76 tackles, including 22 tackles for loss and six sacks. Owens is going into only his third season of competitive football, so the sky is the limit for his potential. So far he has relied on sheer athletic ability and he is only getting better and better as he learns technique and hones his skills.
He has long arms and impressive 4.73-second speed in the 40-yard dash that will make him a versatile, athletic weak-side rush end at the next level.
