"I want to be a part of a new program and Coach [Will] Muschamp is a defensive guy, which made me have much interest in him," Gorman said.
Gorman is UF's 16th commitment in the Class of 2011.
How close was Miami in landing his services?
"They were real close because it's a hometown, but I just wanted to be a little further from home and be apart of Coach Muschamp's system," Gorman said.
Gorman played on the White team, coached by Mike Ditka, along with St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Marcus Roberson (uncommitted) and offensive lineman Bobby Hart (Florida State).
Plantation High linebacker Ryan Shazier (Ohio State) played on the Red squad.
Gorman said playing opportunity, education and atmosphere were the three key factors for him in picking a school.
Going into the game, Gorman said of his three finalists:
"Miami, that's the hometown and I talk to those coaches all the time. It's just a great feeling when your parents come see you every day and can see every game.
"Ohio State, they have one of the biggest atmospheres I've ever been in. I love coach [Jim] Tressel, I love [safeties] coach [Paul] Haynes, who's recruiting me.
"Florida, it's a great, great opportunity for me to go there and play early. I grew up watching the Gators and Miami -- those are the two main Florida schools, besides Florida State. ... I love their sports med facility. It's real good.
"I just want to go to a school where I can have everything all in one."
Verbal commitments are nonbinding. National Signing Day is Feb. 2.
