Pritzker, whose Chicago family founded the Hyatt Hotel chain, made her mark on Central Florida more than a decade ago, when as president of Pritzker Realty Group she was involved in a controversial deal with the city of Orlando to acquire the former Orlando Naval Training Center and turn it into Baldwin Park.
Pritzker was confirmed in a 97-1 Senate vote.
The national hospitality industry hailed the confirmation of one of their own, saying Pritzker's business acumen would be good for the nation's economy.
“We celebrate today with Penny Pritzker on her successful confirmation to be the next Secretary of Commerce, and are grateful to the members of the Senate for their strong support of her,” said Katherine Lugar, president and chief executive officer of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. “This tremendous bipartisan vote serves to reinforce what both the President and the business community already recognized: that Pritzker’s extensive experience with job creation, business growth, and civic involvement is exactly what is needed at this time for our economy.”
