The 10 p.m. hour of ABC's New Year's Eve coverage attracted 12.1 million viewers, according to early ratings. ABC was well ahead of NBC's New Year's Eve coverage with Carson Daly, which drew 5.8 million.
Still, NBC highlighted that its audience was up 53 percent from last year. ABC stressed that it had scored its best 18-to-49 ratings in the time slot in two years.
The networks weren't supplying the late-night numbers when 2014 arrived. Those ratings will come later.
But ABC dominated prime time. ABC averaged 9.1 million viewers to CBS' 6.3 million for reruns, NBC's 6 million, The CW's 1.4 million for a music special repeat and Fox's 1.2 million for sitcom repeats. ABC easily won the 18-to-49 age group, and NBC placed second there.
In a battle of year-end specials at 8, ABC drew 7.5 million viewers for its look at the 30 greatest women in music, and NBC averaged 6 million for a year-end retrospective hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.
When I have more New Year's Eve numbers, I will pass them along.
