Josh Robbins and I are evaluating the 2012-13 season of each player who finished the season on the Magic roster.

Our series taking a look at all 14 players continues with my look at the player whom the Magic selected in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft.

KYLE O’QUINN

Position: Forward-center
Height/Weight: 6-10/240
Age: 23

2012-13 stats: 11:11 mpg, 51.3  fg%,. 00.0  3p%, 66.7 ft%, 4.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 0.9 apg

Background:  O’Quinn didn’t start playing competitive basketball until his junior season in high school and played at Norfolk State – the only school to offer him a scholarship. He put himself on the NBA radar after leading the Spartans, a No. 15 seed, to a shocking upset over Missouri, a No. 2 seed, in the 2012 NCAA tournament. O’Quinn scored 26 points and added 14 rebounds. The Magic drafted the Queens, New York native in the second round (19th pick).

Strengths: O’Quinn didn’t play much until the Magic dealt big man Goose Ayon to Milwaukee after the February trade deadline. A worker bee, he revealed a soft shooting touch and surprising passing ability in cameo appearances. He is willing to mix things up inside. In his best game of the season, O’Quinn scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added six assists in 42 minutes against the Charlotte Bobcats in late April.

Needs to improve: He could still add strength, especially to his lower body, and work on the defensive end of the floor. O’Quinn could develop into a consistent back-up center, but he might be on the bubble in a rebuilding situation.

The future: O’Quinn' is scheduled to earn about $788,000 next season. Although his deal is fully unguaranteed if he's waived before the season opener, it seems all but certain that he'll begin the 2013-14 season on the Magic roster.
