Television promises big interviews in coming days. Katie Couric has a "Mary Tyler Moore Show" reunion, featuring the dying Valerie Harper, on Monday's edition of "Katie." CBS' "60 Minutes" talks to Jeremy Lin of the Houston Rockets about his entry into the NBA. And "60 Minutes" also talks to families of the 26 victims in the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting.
The CBS news magazine starts at 7 p.m. Sunday on WKMG-Channel 6.
Scott Pelley is the correspondent on the Newtown segment. The families say gun control will be an issue for them the rest of their lives, and they cite limiting magazine size, reducing gun trafficking and instituting universal background checks. But some relatives add they are not calling for a ban on assault rifles.
Nelba Marquez-Greene, whose 6-year-old daughter Ana died in the massacre, discusses how her views have changed. "At first ... my heart was, 'Let's have a big bonfire and burn everything. Let's burn all these damn guns,' " she says. "I have since learned that it's a more complex issue than just saying, 'Let's ban assault weapons.' We're looking for real change and common-sense solutions, not things that just sound good."
In an interview with Charlie Rose, NBA star Lin discusses how his Asian ethnicity may have kept him from getting a college basketball scholarship. He played well at Harvard, but no NBA team drafted him.
Could race have been an issue? "I think in the true sense the answer to that is yes," NBA Commissioner David Stern says. "In terms of looking at somebody…I don't know whether he was discriminated against because he was at Harvard," Stern says with a laugh. "Or because he was Asian."
"Katie" airs at 2 p.m. weekdays on WESH-Channel 2. Couric visited the set of "Hot in Cleveland" where the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" cast reunited. Gathering for the interview are Moore, Harper, Cloris Leachman, Georgia Engel and Betty White. Harper discusses her battle with terminal cancer.
White stars in "Hot in Cleveland," and Engel has a recurring role on the TV Land sitcom. The plot has the five women reuniting their bowling team, the Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling. The episode will air this summer.
