Mike Sosinski, who has been coaching football and boys track and field in Lake County Schools since 1980, is retiring as a teacher and coach.

Sosinski split his time primarily between Tavares and Umatilla, though he also spent two years at Mount Dora.

“I really enjoyed working with the kids,” Sosinski said. “You hate to leave the kids behind, but you have to go sometime.”

Sosinski started as an assistant football coach at Tavares and eventually took on the boys track program there. He came to Umatilla in 1988 and won eight district championships. He went to Mount Dora for two years, 1995 and ’96, before returning to Umatilla.

He also was a head football coach at Tavares and Umatilla.
