Rapid hurdles races and a stellar boys 800-meter final highlighted Friday’s rain-delayed

Class 4A District 4 track and field finals.

Colonial junior Lyric Schmalz won the girls 300-meter hurdles with a 43.23-second time

that ranks No. 8 on the area all-time list. Schmalz also won the 100 hurdles and ran a leg

on Colonial’s victorious 4x400 relay.

Cypress Creek’s Carl Augustin sped to the area’s top 2014 time in the boys 110 hurdles

(14.55) and needed it to beat Javon Thomas of Dr. Phillips (14.61). Thomas came back

to win the 300s in a 38.66 time that is a new 2014 honor roll leader.

Emare Hogan, DP’s dynamic freshman half-miler, won the 800 with a time of 1 minute,

54.86 seconds that is the fastest ever by an area ninth grader. He was followed to the

finish line by Timber Creek’s Traivon Smith (1:55.56), Boone’s Tyler Chapman (1:56.43),

Winter Park’s Alex Boucher (1:57.54) and Colonial’s Zachary Riegfelmayer, who missed

qualifying for next week’s Region I meet at Flagler Palm Coast despite a time of 1:57.83.

DP dominated the boys relays with wins in the 4x100 (42.17), 4x400 (3:21.99). and

4x800 (7:56.93) and ran away with the team title. Panthers senior Roderick Proctor added

wins in the long jump with a career-best 23-4 and the high jump at 6-4.

Winter Park put its top girls 4x800 relay group together for the first time and ran an

area-leading time of 9 minutes, 38.50 seconds on its way to a tight win over Colonial

for the girls championship. Tania White, Emily Nix, Katherine Kuhn and Charlotte Stephens

did the legwork on the two mile relay. Stephen, a standout senior, later won the 1,600 and 800.

Boone’s Brandon Reddick ran personal-bests to win the boys 100 (10.73) and 200 (21.61).

Area girls 400 leader Sharrika Barnett of Oak Ridge won that event and the 200.

Colonial’s Armani Wallace won the triple jump (46-0) and was runner-up in the long jump

and high jump.

Other impressive winning efforts included a 36-11¼ girls shot put mark by Colonial’s

Aaliyah Fleurejiste, 163-7 in the boys discus by Boone’s Christian Strange.
