Poulter and Johnson, who won the 2010 crown but unable to defend last year because of scheduling difficulties, also will come back together when Greg Norman’s annual team event tees up a 24th edition Dec. 7-9 in Naples.
“I can see that we will have an exciting competition,” Norman said in a statement. “To a person, each of these players has expressed excitement about who they are paired with and enthusiasm about being in the field.”
Poulter and Johnson claimed a two-stroke victory two years ago at Tiburon GC, but couldn’t make a defense last year when the Shootout was booked for the same week as the European Tour’s season finale.
Now that event comes two weeks earlier, allowing Poulter/Johnson to reunite in the only tandem that pairs opposing Ryder Cup team members.
Another pairing with Ryder Cup overtones features outgoing U.S. captain Davis Love III and FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker. Norman will team with Fredrik Jacobson, a pairing that was supposed to happen last year before a thumb injury caused Jacobson to become a late withdrawal.
The rest of the pairings lineup: Jason Dufner/Vijay Singh; Stewart Cink/Carl Pettersson, Rickie Fowler/Bud Cauley, Justin Leonard/Scott Verplank, Charles Howell/Rory Sabbatini, Sean O’Hair/Kenny Perry, Mark Calcavecchia/Mike Weir.
