CNN's full-throated promotion of the documentary "Blackfish" helped the cable channel win big with young adults Thursday.
The program about killer whales in captivity brought in 472,000 viewers in the 25-to-54 age group, which is most important to news advertisers. In the same age group in those hours, Fox News Channel pulled in 331,000 viewers and MSNBC had 235,000.
In the 18-to-49 age group, CNN did even better. In that demo, CNN averaged 688,000 viewers to Fox News' 216,000 and MSNBC's 173,000.
In total viewers, Fox News remained the winner from 9 to 11 p.m. with 1.9 million viewers to CNN's 1.4 million and MSNBC's 867,000.
Cable news, however, didn't have the blockbusters of broadcasting. "The Big Bang Theory" averaged 17 million viewers for CBS on Thursday, and the World Series averaged 13.4 million for Fox.
Those numbers mean there can be many kinds of winners in television ratings.
"Blackfish" will repeat at 9 p.m. Sunday on CNN.
McGregor tweeted: " 'Black Fish' and 'The Cove' should be watched before deciding to take your kids to any sea life parks."
Dave Navarro tweeted: "A must see documentary! #Blackfish- Best doc of the year!"
