GAINESVILLE—The Florida Gators weren't making much noise out of their Friday Night Lights camp in Gainesville tonight, but late is better than never.
Nearing midnight, the Gators snagged a big-time running back commitment in Mack Brown, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound speed back out of Martin Luther King High in Lithonia, Ga. He runs a 4.38 40-yard-dash.
"I'm excited that he's committed," said fellow Gator commitment Trey Burton, a quarterback out of Venice. "He's like a Marshall Faulk Jr."
Much had been made of Georgia coach Mark Richt plucking recruit after recruit, seven to be exact, out of Urban Meyer's backyard in Florida. Well, Meyer plucked a big one out from under the Dawgs.
Brown had said previously that it was a tight race between the Bulldogs and the Gators as to who would gain his services, and he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution he would not commit while at Gainesville.
Last week, however, people began to see the writing on the wall when Brown did not attend Georgia's big camp "Dawg Night." The AJC reported that Brown's father could not get off work that day.
The Browns had no such conflict on Friday night.
