The woman whose son is accused of escaping prison and taking country singer Crystal Gayle's tour bus to see her one last time has passed away, officials said Thursday.
Authorities said Christopher Daniel Gay, 33, escaped from a prisoner-transport van during a bathroom break on Jan. 21 in South Carolina and stole a string of vehicles -- including the tour bus -- to see his mom in Tennessee before she died.
Gay was arrested in Daytona Beach on Jan. 26 after a 1,000-mile manhunt, police said.
His ailing mother, Anna Shull, died Wednesday from cancer, officials said.
Her funeral is Saturday morning at Jennings and Ayers funeral home in Murfreesboro, Tenn., said Peggy Barrett of the funeral home.
Gay remained Thursday at the Volusia County Branch Jail, officials said.
They would not say whether arrangements would be made for him to attend his mother's funeral.
