  3. Orioles respond to my concession speech

If you're a regular reader of The Schmuck Stops Here, and who isn't these days, you probably read my one complaint about the Orioles' now-complete spring training facility in Sarasota, Fla. I was understandably disappointed when I realized that the Orioles had failed to include my favorite candy -- Peanut M&Ms -- on its concession menu.

  5. Sometimes you feel like a nut; If you don't, Orioles offering peanut-free suites

Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd.
    The Baltimore Sun
Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack, I don't care if I never get back. Peanuts are an iconic part of the baseball experience. But if you have allergies -- like so many people do -- all those...

  9. Recipe Finder: Creole Steak

Joann Pelikan from Baltimore was hoping to locate a recipe for a dish she called Spanish steak. She said she enjoyed eating this when she was growing up in the 1960s and described it as steak that was slow-cooked with green pepper, onions and ketchup to...

  13. Howard County dining: Asian Palace Restaurant & Bar

There was a time when Chinese restaurants abounded in this area. Granted, they still exist in storefronts, specializing in carryout. But many dine-in Chinese restaurants these days have re-invented themselves to include a wide range of culinary genres, not “just” Chinese.

  15. Review: Midtown BBQ & Brew, formerly Midtown Yacht Club, excels with BBQ

Lately in Mount Vernon, especially in the vicinity of the Washington Monument, there's the faint but unmistakably syrupy aroma of barbecue in the air. Follow the trail and you'll find yourself at an unexpected place — the Midtown Yacht Club.

  17. Pho Dat Thanh goes beyond Vietnamese dishes

In many cultures, especially Asian, a humble facade hides a fancy home inside. In this case, though, the inside of Pho Dat Thanh (pronounced "Foe Daht Than") in Snowden Marketplace, Columbia, isn't all that fancy, either. A single room, with a small bar to one side near the entrance, features silvery green walls with a tangerine-hued chair rail in the middle and rather non-descript prints above.

  19. Season-ings: Tenderloins with your flavor, not theirs

Just because the holidays are over and we're into a new year, that doesn't mean the need for "roast beast" is over. Hearty winter dinners are still the order of the evening, but cold weather eating doesn't have to be all about stews and soups. You can serve up some easy (and relatively quick) meals with a bit of finesse, using pork tenderloin and coordinating it with whatever flavoring elements you decide to add.

  23. It had to happen: Thanksgiving dinner gets downsized

On Thanksgiving, one blessing for some of us is a large-group feast that we plan and prepare in stages for several days, if not weeks. Regardless of whether some of the guests are bringing a variety of side dishes, the head chef still has to wrestle with a turkey or two. Depending on the size this usually requires getting ol' Tom into the oven in the wee hours of Thanksgiving morning.

This is a picture of a Steller's Jay. (Cyanocittia Stelleri ) I can't believe how many peanuts these guys can eat. They can swallow a large peanut and still carry another one in the beak. I take out a handful of peanuts and they are gone in 5 minutes. Mark from Chehalis.
