1. Sizzle some steaks for Mother's Day

Your family may be the stay-at-home-on-the-holidays type. If that's the case, you might think breakfast in bed is just the thing to honor Mom on her day. But this year, why not ask her opinion? It's entirely possible that the female parental unit in your house would prefer dinner on the deck over breakfast in bed. Even if she has to fix some of that dinner herself.

3. Restaurant review: Adventurous food, friendly service at 1542 Gastropub

"Our chef is amazing."
"Our chef is amazing." Checking on our table between appetizers and entrees, our waitress waxed poetic about chef Cyrus Keefer, the culinary force behind 1542 Gastropub in Federal Hill. She was nearly gushing, but she was also right: Keefer's food is...

5. Baltimore Farmers' Market returns on Sunday

The Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar begins its 35th season April 1. This is the second year the popular market is starting so early. Until 2003, when it was moved up to the first week in May, the opening came in early June.

7. Heart-healthy 'Kathy's Cookbook' was labor of love for late cardiac patient

Kathy Brown wasn't always much of a chef — but she was an educator.
Kathy Brown wasn't always much of a chef — but she was an educator. When Brown, the former head of Grace Christian School, was diagnosed with amyloidosis of the heart in April 2008, she began experimenting with recipes to suit her new low-fat, low-...

9. Lunch for $10 or Less: Old World Delicatessen

The Greek cold cut sub at Old World Delicatessen is a big sandwich. Portly. Granted, the largest contributor to its bulk is the roll, a hot dog-bun-class giant that threatens to take over the sandwich at every bite.

11. Tailgating recipe: Samba Dogs

As "Barbecue Bible" author Steven Raichlen points out in "Raichlen's Tailgating! 31 Righteous Recipes for On-the-Go Grilling," his latest ebook, "Long before NASCAR and the Super Bowl, there was tailgating. This distinctly American institution dates back to 1869, and probably earlier, when Rutgers and Princeton played their first intercollegiate football game. Students gathered before the contest to drink and socialize, so legend goes, serving their picnics on the lowered tailgates of horse-drawn wagons."

13. Restaurant review: Liberatore's of Eldersburg is full of personality

Dante Liberatore works a room in a way that few restaurateurs care to, or dare to, these days. We saw him compel a sour patron to concede that her wait for a table had been exactly as long as he said it would be. She wasn't thrilled, but her husband was. Later we heard him tell a diner at a nearby table that if she still didn't like a pasta dish the kitchen remade for her, he would eat it himself. She didn't like it, and he ate it. That's part of the fun at Liberatore's of Eldersburg.

15. Restaurant review: The stars align on a Fells Point rooftop

The view from the Olive Room, the serenely seductive new penthouse restaurant at the Inn at the Black Olive, dazzles you senseless. Suddenly, Baltimore, seen from this fresh angle, looks like a European port city, vibrant and jagged, a starry skyline rising from waterfront promenades.

17. Matching up holiday guests with the right Baltimore hotel

The holidays are for family. But while we can squeeze folks around the table for turkey, or into the living room to unwrap presents, sometimes they just have to sleep somewhere else. Here's a sampling of some area hotels that could a good fit your relatives.

19. Tailgating recipe: Pesto Salmon and Veggies en Papillote

While the en papillote ("in parchment") method of cooking might sound a little too fancy for tailgating, Mark Graham, in his Dinner Tonight column for the Chicago Tribune, has suggested that it's really nothing more than food wrapped in parchment paper and cooked.

21. Spontaneous sociable needn't mean subpar snacking

One reason most of us love the holiday season is that it provides opportunities to spend more time at home with family and friends. One reason most of us who are the family chefs dislike the holiday season is the stress it provides when we spend more time at home with family and friends.
