  1. Zoo celebrates Samson's 4th birthday

Samson, the Maryland Zoo's young elephant, made quick work of his vegetarian cake while a hillside of children and parents serenaded the birthday boy who is turning 4. His arching and nimble trunk first went for the prize, one of four big carrot...

  3. Restaurant review: New Miss Shirley's is a hit in Annapolis

By now, it's safe to say Miss Shirley's has Southern cuisine down to a science, regardless of the location.

  5. Seafood and Sausage, Southern-style

October is one of Mother Nature's finest moments, in theory. Cool, maybe even crisp. Occasionally, some rain. But we best remember the bright, sunny days, and the pleasant evenings, when we can enjoy both the great outdoors and the snug indoors.

  7. Howard County dining: Kloby's Smokehouse

A lot of people think of barbecue and ice cream as strictly seasonal treats. Not so, say the regulars at Kloby’s Smokehouse in North Laurel. From a counter-service barbecue joint that opened in April 2008, Kloby’s has pretty much doubled in size so that it is now a full-service restaurant that can seat 150. And it now specializes not only in barbecue but in bourbon. And beer. And bread pudding. And ice cream.

  9. Restaurant review: Kloby's is smokin'

Walk into Kloby's Smokehouse, and the first thing you notice is the smell.
Walk into Kloby's Smokehouse, and the first thing you notice is the smell. The rich aroma of meat being smoked for barbecue hangs thick in the air. It's a hint of what lies ahead, and part of the reason why this popular Laurel restaurant recently had...

Next time you're near Sandy Spring, check out Urban Bar-B-Que, 805 Olney Sandy Spring Road (Highway 108). It's that easy to recommend. If you look the place up online, you may be turned off by the redneck motif. Don't be. Urban's approach tips its hat...

  13. Dining for $25 or less: Grill Art Cafe

Grill Art Cafe is Hampden's little restaurant that could. The early days at this handsome cafe were awfully rough, with service problems enduring well past the grace period most diners extend to a new restaurant. Grill Art has hung in there, though - going on five years now - and it's evolved into a very decent dining option. Operating out of the spotlight has probably helped, and hard work definitely hasn't hurt - Grill Art serves lunch, or brunch, and dinner seven days a week. My guess is that people started rediscovering Grill Art when their first choice on the Avenue was booked. If so, good for Grill Art for making its own luck.

  15. Dining for $25 or less: Granny's

Granny's is the love project of Valari and Aaron Dorsey - she's the head chef, and it's her grandmother, a professional chef in her own right, to whom Granny's pays tribute. From its early spring opening, the allure of all-day breakfast and Southern-influenced home cooking has drawn diners to its corporate strip location, former home of a hamburger chain, in Owings Mills.

  21. Savannah offers Southern food, French techniques

    Sun restaurant critic
