  1. Appetizers are stars for summer gatherings

We tend to think of the winter holidays as a time to create appetizers for those cocktail parties we like to host. But spring and summer have their appetizing merits, too. Casual outdoor-indoor get-togethers – for graduations, showers, even weddings, are perfect excuses to transform seasonal ingredients into walk-around foods that are stars of the gatherings we've planned.

  3. Cooking with fresh herbs brings fragrance and color to the table

One of the most delightful things about learning to cook is learning how herbs, which are virtually calorie free, can enhance even the simplest basic main ingredients, helping us achieve ever more kudos from the dear ones in our lives whose lot it is to consume what we've created in the kitchen.

  5. Restaurant Review: Silo.5% adds just enough substance to its style

The setting for Silo.5% Wine Bar is Silo Point, a glamorous luxury condominium carved out of a former working grain terminal in Locust Point. The complex is surrounded by the remnants of industry, and even from the ground floor, the views of the freight lines and the working harbor are stirring.

  7. Quick suppers in 30 minutes can be healthy, too

Most every home cook has a particular approach to the weeknight meal. Some of us are really into doing ahead. Slow cookers are their thing. On the other hand, unless we're whipping up goodies for a dinner party, others of us can't bear the thoughts of...

  9. Howard County dining: Asian Palace Restaurant & Bar

There was a time when Chinese restaurants abounded in this area. Granted, they still exist in storefronts, specializing in carryout. But many dine-in Chinese restaurants these days have re-invented themselves to include a wide range of culinary genres, not “just” Chinese.

  11. Nothin' says lovin' like pasta from the oven

Whatever Punxsutawny Phil predicts today, we can rest assured that there's more cold weather ahead. And, as we all know, cold weather calls for comfort food. Actually, any excuse for comfort food will do, but setting out to prepare tummy-warming fuel for body and soul is particularly satisfying this time of year.

  13. Treat yourself to a rich and fragrant soup or chowder

This everyday busy time of year, this kind of weather — there's no need to make a case for eating soup. Homemade soup, that is. Rich and fragrant, filled with all the goodies you like to use and which, ostensibly, your family likes to eat. And not...

  15. For your good luck

It’s supposedly good for you to eat pork or cabbage or black-eyed peas at New Year’s, and for my last post of the year I offer you this recipe for “caviar” made with black-eyed peas. It’s a variant of a recipe for the 1970s...

  17. Pho Dat Thanh goes beyond Vietnamese dishes

In many cultures, especially Asian, a humble facade hides a fancy home inside. In this case, though, the inside of Pho Dat Thanh (pronounced "Foe Daht Than") in Snowden Marketplace, Columbia, isn't all that fancy, either. A single room, with a small bar to one side near the entrance, features silvery green walls with a tangerine-hued chair rail in the middle and rather non-descript prints above.

  19. 'Top Chef: Texas' recap: 'Don't Be Tardy for the Dinner Party'

Welcome back Top Cheffers! I missed you all last week, but I was too busy baking pumpkin whoopie pies for Thanksgiving to recap "Top Chef: Texas." But two things happened last week that you need to know.

  21. Spontaneous sociable needn't mean subpar snacking

One reason most of us love the holiday season is that it provides opportunities to spend more time at home with family and friends. One reason most of us who are the family chefs dislike the holiday season is the stress it provides when we spend more time at home with family and friends.

  23. Tequila cocktail: At AVAM, Mr. Rain's Funhouse entices with Eve's Habit

There's more to summer cocktails than mojitos or margaritas; sure they get the job done, but they aren't nearly as refreshing as Mr. Rain's sinfully made Eve's Habit.
