  1. Appetizers are stars for summer gatherings

We tend to think of the winter holidays as a time to create appetizers for those cocktail parties we like to host. But spring and summer have their appetizing merits, too. Casual outdoor-indoor get-togethers – for graduations, showers, even weddings, are perfect excuses to transform seasonal ingredients into walk-around foods that are stars of the gatherings we've planned.

  3. It had to happen: Thanksgiving dinner gets downsized

On Thanksgiving, one blessing for some of us is a large-group feast that we plan and prepare in stages for several days, if not weeks. Regardless of whether some of the guests are bringing a variety of side dishes, the head chef still has to wrestle with a turkey or two. Depending on the size this usually requires getting ol' Tom into the oven in the wee hours of Thanksgiving morning.

  5. With deviled eggs, restaurants find a slice of heaven

When Irene Smith took over Baltimore's Woman's Industrial Kitchen last fall, she was determined to return it to its rightful place as a lunchroom where American home cooking is celebrated. What better way to do that, she thought, than to restore the classic deviled egg to the menu?

  7. Maryland sturgeon restoration effort in limbo

    — "Sturgie" is biding his time, waiting to be introduced to the right female.
    — "Sturgie" is biding his time, waiting to be introduced to the right female. Caught off Hooper's Island five years ago, the hulking six-foot Atlantic sturgeon passes his days lolling about in a large tank at the University of Maryland's Horn Point...

  9. For your good luck

It’s supposedly good for you to eat pork or cabbage or black-eyed peas at New Year’s, and for my last post of the year I offer you this recipe for “caviar” made with black-eyed peas. It’s a variant of a recipe for the 1970s...

  11. Dining for $25 or less: Grill Art Cafe

Grill Art Cafe is Hampden's little restaurant that could. The early days at this handsome cafe were awfully rough, with service problems enduring well past the grace period most diners extend to a new restaurant. Grill Art has hung in there, though - going on five years now - and it's evolved into a very decent dining option. Operating out of the spotlight has probably helped, and hard work definitely hasn't hurt - Grill Art serves lunch, or brunch, and dinner seven days a week. My guess is that people started rediscovering Grill Art when their first choice on the Avenue was booked. If so, good for Grill Art for making its own luck.

  13. Sofia Solomon, cheese advocate

Sofia Solomon didn't invent cheese, of course, but she is credited with helping to introduce many Chicagoans to the delights of artisan cheeses, notably those made by this region's cheesemakers.

  15. Road To Hell Paved With Caviar and Slippery Nipples

    The Hartford Courant
It's really hard to stand out as incompetent while running the city of Hartford, because almost everybody who tried to do it for the past 40 years has been either a knave, a genial idiot, an ill-tempered goose or some chimera-like combination of all...

    The Hartford Courant
So, on New Year's Eve Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra and spouse, his chief of staff Jared Kupiec and guest, two city cops, Chief Operating Officer Saundra Kee Borges, and an eighth person (Jay Gatsby, perhaps?) ran up a $700-plus tab at Max Downtown,...
