1. Saved from bulldozer, UM 'hillock' teems with life

Harvard University has a research forest. So does Duke. Yale has multiple forests. The University of Maryland has “the wooded hillock." a 24-acre patch of trees at the northern tip of the state's flagship public campus.

  3. Raise your glass: Blue Velvet, Pazo

I've never been one for flowers. I don't want to smell like them, don't want to receive them, don't even want to take care of them. But leave it to Pazo in <a class="runtimeTopic" href="#">Harbor East to make me want to drink them.

  5. Keeping it light with springtime desserts

After you've finished the Peeps and jelly beans and chocolate eggs the Bunny left, what are you going to do for sweets? You don't want to hark back to chocolate fudge cakes and bread puddings. Too heavy for the days ahead. Our exercise du jour, then,...

  7. Fun brunch follows up the egg hunt

One thing about the weather: We haven't figured out how to control it, so you never know what's going to be emanating from the heavens on any given holiday. Easter's no exception. We've turned blue (nearly) in Massachusetts in our new bonnets, light jackets and patent leather shoes. We've stripped down to shorts and tank tops to gather melted, ant-infested chocolate eggs in Florida. Thankfully, Easter in Maryland tends to offer weather most of us can handle. Cool enough to get the kids into Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes (even if they're not totally frou-frou dresses or cute little suits) and warm enough to at least have our holiday meal appetizers on the deck.

  11. Garden Q&A: For blueberries, choose high-bush

I plan to plant 20 low-bush blueberries. I've prepared the beds with leaf mulch, compost and sulfur. How do you recommend planting to maximize survival?

  13. Resolutions made simple

New Year's resolutions are the kiss of death. We all know this. So instead of drafting some sweeping resolution we know darn well we'll never keep, how about thinking small for 2012. How about trying one thing — maybe two — that just might...

  15. Restaurant review: Beers, expanded burger menu among draws at Alonso's

Alonso's in Roland Park is an unpretentious restaurant in a pretentious part of the city. Since 1931, it's been serving modest food and good beer to much acclaim and many satisfied customers. It hasn't changed one bit over the years.

  17. Tailgate at the table

Is football — more specifically, Thursday's Ravens-49ers game, the first time a Baltimore NFL team has played on Thanksgiving in 46 years — threatening to overshadow your holiday meal plans? Instead of fighting the game, why not embrace it?...

  19. Top 10 ways to beat the heat include drawing a cold bath and going to a movie

July was the warmest on record in Baltimore. The average temperature at BWI was 81.7 degrees; the only time I felt it that cool was very early some mornings. We had a streak of 15 consecutive days of 90-plus weather, and four days over 100 degrees. The...

  21. Drink up: Blueberry Acai Mojito Crush, Ryleigh's Oyster

Every summer, I am reminded of the gigantic crush I have on the Crush. You know, the fruit-juice-and-vodka-cocktail that's known as a Baltimore specialty.
