Summary

Walking down "The Avenue" in Hampden, it's hard to miss Cafe Hon with its 30-foot flamingo hanging on the front of the building. The diner celebrates Baltimore's flashy fashion of beehives, funky glasses, spandex and leopard print. There is an adjacent Hon Bar and gift shop, which sells novelties such as shirts, glasses, key chains and bumper stickers. The Hon Bar offers live music, its own menu of bar food staples and multiple televisions. While customers are charmed by the retro decor, attitude and "Bawlmerese" slang, the cafe has affordable, memorable food. Must-try items include the cinnamon Hon buns, hot fudge sundaes and meatloaf. The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The neighborhood spot has morphed into a tourist destination thanks to national attention in publications and television shows. Denise Whiting opened the cafe in the early 1990s. She renovated an old hardware store and reopened at 1002 W. 36th St. in 1995. Since 1994, Whiting has organized the Hon Fest, which attracts 20,000 visitors. The summer festival, now two days, celebrates all things Baltimore and includes food vendors, shopping, music and the crowning of Bawlmer's Best Hon.
