CALIFORNIA

Romance in the Redwoods

Amble through the Santa Cruz area's redwoods on an easy one-hour walk with a Valentine's Day theme. Pedestrians will learn about the courtship, mating and reproductive behaviors of banana slugs, newts and woodpeckers. A volunteer state park interpreter leads the walk, which is billed as appropriate for those 12 and older.

When, where: Feb. 16 at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Boulder Creek.

Cost: No fee for the walk; parking $6 per vehicle.

GEORGIA

Savannah Music Festival

Said to be Georgia's largest music festival, this mega-event presents more than 100 concerts in 20 venues over 17 days, all in the historic district of Savannah. Among highlights: premieres of original compositions by Wycliffe Gordon and Stewart Copeland and concerts by the Blind Boys of Alabama, Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby, Audra McDonald, and the Beaux Arts Trio on its final tour.

When, where: March 20 to April 5.

Cost: Tickets $10 to $85; some educational programs and high school jazz band shows free.

OREGON

11th annual Fisher Poets Gathering

Fishermen and angler women show their tender side, as well as their humorous side, their creative side and their salty side (some performances have been known to raise eyebrows) during this Astoria event. More than 50 folks who make their living in the commercial fishing industry will present original poetry, stories and songs. There will also be workshops, gallery exhibitions and late-night original video presentations.

When, where: Feb. 22 to 24 at various venues.

Cost: Weekend admission buttons are $10, day passes $5.

MINNESOTA

Winter Tracks

Ski for free on Nordic trails along the Gunflint Trail of northeastern Minnesota; learn about winter camping and ice fishing; take a dog-sled ride; and party at the Snow Boot Ball Banquet and Dance during this event hosted by member lodges of Minnesota's Gunflint Trail Assn. Among about 50 indoor and outdoor activities are a trout derby; an ice-auger- drilling contest; broom-ball games; a Mini-Winter Olympics for the kids, with sledding and snowshoeing; and lighted nighttime skiing.

When, where: Feb. 28 to March 2 at various locations in northeastern Minnesota.

Cost: Most events free; dog-sled rides $39 per person with snowmobile tour, $10 per person; trout derby $25 per person, $45 per family; banquet and dance, donation requested at door.
