SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A 20-year-old man died Wednesday at a hospital after he suffered a self-inflicted shot with a crossbow near Reeds Spring on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters with the Southern Stone County Fire Protection District said they were called out along with emergency medical crews to the downtown Reeds Spring area, where they found the man bleeding severely from the neck.

Southern Stone County firefighters said the wound was to the front of the man's throat.  First responders administered CPR. The man went into cardiac arrest at some point.

Due to the severity of the man's injuries, he was taken to the hospital by ground rather than by airlift.  The Stone County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident as a suicide attempt, according to Chief Deputy Tim Gideon.
