Wesley Medical Center diagnosed its first case of Influenza A this past weekend. Lois Rahal, R.N., an infection prevention nurse, said that it is not unusual to see cases this early but that February and March are the peak months for the flu.
Common flu symptoms are fever, body ache and sometimes repertory illness. Rahal says the incubation period can be 48 to 72 hours and the illness usually lasts five to seven days.
Wesley says they see anywhere from 15 to 50 cases of the flue that are severe enough to require hospitalization.
If you think you have the flu, Rahal advises to stay home so you won’t spread it to your co-workers. She also says coughing or sneezing into the crook of your arm helps prevent spreading the illness.
