Opera is something everyone should experience, and to our luck there are a couple of great opportunities right here in Wichita to experience well-performed Opera:
1) The Wichita Grand Opera where you can see live performances that include local talent.
The next Wichita Grand Opera performance is March 17 and 18. It will be the opera Johann Strauss, Jr.’s The Bat (Die Fledermaus).
2) The Murdock Theatre has live showings of the New York Metropolitan Opera usually at least once a month.
The next showing of a Met Opera at the Murdock is April 7th and 8th. It will be the opera Jules Massenet’s “Manon.”
If you’ve never explored the opera – I say, what do you have to lose? Maybe one evening…ok. More importantly, though, what do you have to gain? A new art form – that’s huge!!! I know a common thread of my blogs has been about opening yourself up to new forms of music, but that’s because I think it’s important.
Also, if you’ve been to either of these, I’d encourage you to check the other out as well. You can never have too much opera. ¿
Before jumping right into your first opera, though, I’d say do a little research. The two main things I’d look at would be the story line (so that you’re not completely lost…especially if it’s in another language) and just a bit about the composer. Just so you have a bit of the background – which will help with enjoyment.
So get yourself to an opera and have a blast!
