The Learning Channel’s "My Strange Addiction" introduced us to a Sacramento teen with a habit of eating plastic.

Kailyn, 18, says she's been eating plastic every day for eleven years. She prefers television remotes, drink lids, beads and cocktail swords.

Dr. Stephen Grinstead, a Sacramento-based psychologist and expert with Counseling California, doesn’t use the word addiction when talking about Kailyn’s case. He says addiction has to do with a biological change in the brain after using things like drugs and alcohol in excess over a period of time.

He says Kailyn’s habits are a psychological dependency.

“A lot of things get labeled as addictive, and, unfortunately, it takes some of the creditability away from some of the people that suffer from a true addictive disorder.”

None the less, Dr. Grinstead says Kailyn needs help.

“With the proper help, this woman can stop hurting herself like that.”
