The Thong it's been a pop culture staple ever since Sisqo made it the most recognizable hook in all of song writing. But now Cosmopolitan Magazine says the barely there underwear is yesterday's news.
We are certain that, as we speak, there are teams of underwear scientists out there dreaming up the next big, or maybe little, thing. But is that one style of unmentionable really falling by the way-side? My assignment was to find out if it's true that, as Cosmo proclaimed, the thong is dead.
"I buy thongs all the time," said Nadine Martinez, while shopping in the underwear section of a Sacramento Target. "I don't really like these because they don't feel really comfortable," she said, holding-up a pair of boy shorts.
But the thong's original appeal wasn't comfort. It was looks.
"With a boy short you can get a really smooth lacey look and you don't get VPL.," said Elizabeth Porter.
"VPL?" inquired her friend Nora Allen.
"Visible Panty Line," explained Porter.
"I think it's a ridiculous conversation. It's just something you wear to keep your lady bits inside," Allen said.
Ridiculous?! Is she kidding?
This is second only to man replacing dinosaur as the animal on the planet.
"Some people say less is more," laughed Laura Low. "But personally, I don't wear thongs, because I like the element of surprise."
What about special occasion underwear? Thong or not a thong?
"It used to be the thong until a couple years ago when I discovered the boy short. I prefer boy shorts," said Porter.
If you are a fan of the floss, never fear; the stores I visited are certainly still selling thongs.
But there's no doubt boy-shorts are taking up more and more shelf-space.
