SACRAMENTO—Authorities say a severed leg found along a stretch of Sutter County Monday morning was likely cut off a human being during a medical surgery.
A press release from the Sutter County Sheriff's Department states evidence discovered during the autopsy of the leg showed signs the limb was cut during a medical procedure. Authorities have contacted nearby hospitals and surgical centers throughout Yuba County, hoping someone would claim the severed leg.
Hospitals generally retain severed limbs for up to six months after they are excised from a body, the Sutter County Sheriff's Department reports. They are now expanding their inquiries into surgical procedures to all valley hospitals.
Authorities initially believed the severed leg may have been tied to a missing person's case in Sacramento County. That case is still under investigation.
