Authorities say a man armed with a shotgun and a hatchet has been shot and wounded by Oakland police after he opened fire on several parked patrol cruisers.

Officer Jeff Thomason says 25-year-old Nathaniel Reddick was shot late Saturday near police headquarters in downtown Oakland.

Police say Reddick rode up to the scene on a bicycle and began shooting at police vehicles, damaging at least six of them. He was confronted by a police sergeant and lieutenant, but refused to back down.

The lieutenant fired one shot, wounding the suspect. He was taken into custody.

Police say Reddick, of Sacramento, is hospitalized with wounds not considered to be life-threatening.
