SACRAMENTO—The full FOX40.com interview with former KWOD DJ and ex1065.com founder Boomer Barbosa:
FOX40.com: Who came up with the idea to launch x1065.com? Who is involved in the station? When did it go live?
FOX40.com: What kind of music will x1065.com play?
Barbosa: There are a lot of great New Rock Alternative bands making special music (and selling a lot of CD's!) that have no exposure on Sacramento radio. There was also no outlet for Sacramento area bands to expose their music or publicize their performances. eX1065.com plays the local music and is closely tied into the local scene. Sacramento has a great tradition of launching the careers of many globally renowned bands. These bands could never have gotten off the ground without support on the local level early in their careers. While the formatic core artists will be heard ( Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Paramore, AFI, Muse, etc.)... and classic alternative bands will be featured (Social Distortion and Cure to Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana), eX1065.com will feature great new music and, like I mentioned, the great local music being produced here in Sacramento!
FOX40.com: How will x1065.com connect with their listeners ( Facebook, MySpace, something else)?
Barbosa: eX1065.com has a presence on all the big social networking sites. We will also have our own social network community on eX1065.com that will give local music makers their own pages to promote themselves and further connect with their fans! We will have a large presence on the streets as well. You will be able to find us at local clubs and at shows all over town!
FOX40.com: What are some of the major differences between broadcasting terrestrially and broadcasting online? Which is more enjoyable?
Barbosa: Well, it certainly is a lot more of a "free" broadcasting experience without the governmental regulations of the FCC looming over you! Also, we are free of the crushing presence of corporate debt that affects all the major broadcast companies. This debt creates an atmosphere where programming decisions are being made by shareholders and bankers... not by radio people. eX1065 is programmed by people that have a passion for the music and for radio.
FOX40.com: The Internet's pretty loose -- will the music played on x1065.com be censored, or will the DJs let the profanity fly?
Barbosa: Like we say on eX1065... this is music as the artists intended you to hear it. No governmental entities without a musical bone in their body editing the art. As far as the DJ's, while you might hear a word once in a while... there is no effort to play up the cussing for effect. No more or less than you would hear in everyday life.
FOX40.com: Will ex1065.com be sponsored, or will it run advertisements during the music?
Barbosa: Payin bills is fun! While a vast majority of webcasters place "donate now" buttons on their site, we're going to try to steer clear of that. We hope people will show their support for the station by using our sponsor's products and services and letting them know that they heard about them on eX1065! The ads will not be presented as they are on regular radio, in clusters of 4-10 minutes. They will be informative yet unobtrusive to the listening experience. We have also set up an eX1065 store where all "profits" go back into keeping the station going.
FOX40.com: Why streaming music, as opposed to trying to find another job in radio or creating a podcast?
Barbosa: I had plenty of opportunities at traditional radio out of town, but the Sacramento area is where the roots have dug in. I had no interest in going on the radio world tour. Podcasting will be a part of eX1065 in the near future as we introduce specialty shows featuring some great talent. I'm a fan and believer of the "radio" type of presentation... just don't like what it's mutated into on traditional broadcast radio.
FOX40.com: Ninjas or pirates?
Barbosa: I like Hobos... and, yes, I would put them in the same category. Hobos kick ass!
