Animal control officers and volunteers at the Tracy Animal Shelter are hoping the woman suspected of taking a cat and a cockatoo from the shelter Friday will have a change of heart and return the animals.

The woman was seen running from the cat room and speeding away from the shelter in her car, according to witnesses. Animal control officers say they later discovered that an older Maine Coon cat and the shelter's only bird were taken by the woman.

"Very weird," said Animal Control Officer Lisa McDonald.

Animal control officials say the woman is no stranger to the shelter. A few years back she adopted some cats and returned them because she couldn't take care of them, say officers. Since then, she has not been allowed to adopt animals.
