FAIR OAKS—The Bella Vista Broncos kicked off their 2010 football season tonight with a home match against the Cordova Lancers. Lead by head coach Matt Polston, the Broncos and fans alike entered the stadium with high spirits and enthusiasm for the start of the season. Bronco captains Josh Estrella ('11), Terry Jackson('11), Tyler Black ('11) and Tim Rocha ('11) faced the Cordova captains and ended up with the kickoff to start the game. Bronco kicker Derek Beyer ('12) got the ball down to the ten yard line. The Bronco kickoff team was able to stop the Lancers return at the twenty-five to start the game with a Cordova offensive possession.
After multiple changes in possession, Bella Vista's Quarterback Ryan Locke ('12) threw a short pitch to Alastair Lavin ('11) for a fifty yard touchdown run. Derek Beyer's first extra point was blocked as time ran out on the clock concluding the first quarter with a 6-0 Bella Vista lead.
With frustrated offenses on both sides, the third quarter moved slowly. Mid way through the quarter, Cordova head coach Perry Mantch was ejected from the game under what some claimed to be unfair circumstances. With one minute remaining, the Lancers showed some fight with a touchdown run, but a blocked extra point. The quarter ended with a 14-6 score, Broncos still hanging on to their lead.
After clumsy mistakes on Bella Vista's offensive end, Cordova's Elijah Qualls ('13) scored in the first seconds of the fourth quarter. The Broncos stopped the two point conversion but were forced to punt yet again. Cordova's second possession of the quarter resulted in a twenty yard run by Michael Hicks('12), followed by a touchdown reception and a two point conversion by John McKeown ('12). With momentum on their side, Cordova's Chris Lane ('11) intercepted a Bronco pass for a near touchdown. In the following play, Lane received the touchdown pass to put the Lancers ahead 33-14 with one minute remaining. In the final minute, the Broncos hit Michael White ('12) on a long run twice in row, the second earning them a touchdown. Beyer's extra point was good as the final horn sounded with a final score of Cordova 33, Bella Vista 21.
