If covering news teaches you anything, it's that anything can happen at any time. And suddenly, you find yourself in crisis mode. This is why FOX40 is proud to team up with BloodSource for our Summer Blood Drive. We do this with the goal of helping people like Alicia Alley, whose lives depend on it.
"My body is basically eating my cells," said Alley. It is the harsh reality she has been dealing with for the last four years. She went from constantly feeling tired .. to being diagnosed with a rare and potentially life-threatening disease called Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria or PNH.
"It was really hard to come to terms with, because I am only 32," said Alley. To look at her, Alley appears peppy and her skin full of color. However, Alley says that's only because she recently had another transfusion of blood and platelets. Liquid life donated by strangers, like those who donate at the FOX40 blood drive. Alley said, "I'm amazed and I have so much gratitude for people that do give, because they don't know who they're helping."
Alley's story is two-fold. The donated blood is keeping her going while she awaits a bone marrow transplant. All she needs is to find a match. She says having to depend so much on the generosity of others is humbling. "I am so lucky and honored just to be receiving life."
You can donate blood and sign up to get on the bone marrow registry at the Summer Blood Drive. It is Saturday, June 25, at the Promenade at the Sacramento Gateway. If you are not too familiar with the area, just look for us across from Target in North Natomas. We'll be there from 10:30 am - 4:30 pm. with lots of freebies and drawings to make the experience a pleasant one.
