A cadet with the California Highway Patrol has died.
The man, identified as 24-year-old Randy Atchison from Ceres, was reportedly feeling ill after training Friday at the CHP's West Sacramento academy. He was taken to Sutter Memorial Hospital, where he died Wednesday morning.
Atchison was part of a 124-member class that had just started their 27-week training last month.
He was a father to a 1-month-old baby girl.
The CHP is helping Atchison's family make funeral arrangements.
According to the CHP, this is the second death of a cadet in the department's 81-year history.
In 1951, a cadet died during motorcycle training exercise.
