A Lodi couple faces child abuse charges after school officials notice burns on a 6-year-old girl.  Following an investigation, police believe the girl's father, 29-year-old Javier Velazquez repeatedly beat the child with a stick and burned her with a clothes iron.  The girl's step-mother, 28-year-old Maria Lupian, was aware of the abuse but did nothing to stop it.

Police say the burns on the girl's body were severe and appeared to be in layers, indicating the same areas on the child were repeatedly burned.  Velazquez and Lupian were arraigned in the Lodi Branch of the San Joaquin County Superior Court.  Both are charged with child abuse with great bodily injury.
