WASHINGTON, D.C.—California Representative Jackie Speier opened up about losing a baby when she was just a teenager. A topic she said she "hadn't planned on talking about", but did in reaction to a fellow congressman describing an abortion procedure.
The House of Represantatives was debating a plan to cut taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood Thursday night. The organization is prohibited from using federal funds to perform abortions, however Republican Representative Mike Pence from Indiana pushed to add an amendment to the budget that would stop funding Planned Parenthood.
Rep. Speier then stepped to the mic, and said she wasn't going to give her planned comments, because "the gentleman from New Jersey just put my stomach in knots".
She then opened up about a similar procedure she had when she was 17 years old.
The House voted Friday morning and passed the Pence amendment to prohibit taxpayer funds for Planned Parenthood.
Rep. Speier on her website said she is disappointed in Friday's vote. "Planned Parenthood provides vital services to women including family planning and cervical cancer screenings. I am disappointed that the House passed the Pence amendment to defund it."
The former California State legislator has represented the 12th District, including part of San Francisco and San Mateo County, since 2008.
