The first mushers have scratched in The Last Great Race. Melissa Owens and Zoya DeNure scratched in Rainy Pass at 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Tuesday respectively, ending their bids in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Owens, a 21-year-old Nome musher who wore bib 12, says she injured her leg before the race then injured it again on the trail. She had 14 dogs when she decided to scratch.
Gakona resident DeNure, 34, who wore bib 9, says she scratched for the welfare of the 15 dogs in her team.
