CYPRESS, Calif. (KTLA) -- Funeral services were held Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress for Democratic California Sen. Jenny Oropeza.

Oropeza, who was facing re-election next month, died in a Long Beach Hospital Wednesday from complications of a blood clot that was found in her abdomen in May.

She was 53.

The Carson lawmaker was known for championing health and environmental causes, including unsuccessful legislation that sought to ban smoking at state parks.

She missed most of this year's session due to her illness.

Oropeza was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2004 and treatments proved successful.

She was elected to the Senate in 2006 after serving six years in the Assembly.

Her name remains on the November 2nd ballot.

If she wins, the governor will call a special election.
