SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) -- A man and a mother were killed, and her three young children were injured, in a crash in Santa Ana Sunday night, authorities said.

The accident happened just after 7 p.m. Sunday on West 5th Street near English Street.

Witnesses told police that the car carrying the five people was going about 60 to 80 mph when the driver had to swerve to avoid another vehicle.

The driver hit the sidewalk and lost control. The car then hit a metal pole, went airborne and hit a utility pole, according to Anthony Bertagna of the Sana Ana Police Department.

The two adults in the car were killed in the crash.

They have been identified as Alfonso Guzman and Guillermina Millan-Guadarrama, 38, the mother of the three children.

Authorities said Guzman was a friend and was driving the car. The group was on their way to church at the time of the accident.

The three children were rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center.

A 2-year-old underwent surgery, and was listed in critical but stable condition.

A 6-year-old suffered cuts and a 10-year-old had a broken wrist. They were both in stable condition.

The accident damaged a power pole, knocked out power to about 1,500 customers in the area. Power has since been fully restored.

"I opened up the window and I hear the explosion of the [power] pole blowing up," said witness Barbara Rivera.

"So when I looked out the window, the next thing I seen was the car overturned in our driveway."

The cause of the crash is now under investigation.
