LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Consumers are being warned about contaminated papayas following a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 97 people in 23 states, including California.

Agromond Produce, Inc., a Texas company, is recalling all papayas sold under the brand names Blondie, Yaya, Mañanita, and Tastylicious Brand papayas sold prior to July 23, 2011.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and anyone with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people who consume the tainted fruit could experience fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

The papayas were imported from Mexico and distributed nationwide and to Canada through retail stores and wholesalers.
