HUNTINGTON BEACH -- A registered sex offender intentionally crashed his car into another vehicle in order to sexually assault the young driver, prosecutors told jurors today.
The assault occurred about 2:40 a.m. four years ago Thursday as the victim was driving home from a friend's house in her parent's mini-van.
When the teen got out of the minivan to check for damage, prosecutors say, Patton forced her to the other side of the vehicle and sexually assaulted her.
She was able to get away when he was startled by passing vehicles.
The girl went home and reported the sexual assault to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Forensic evidence collected from the scene included a partial hand print from the right rear door of the victim's minivan.
Patton is charged with one felony count each of kidnapping to commit a sex offense, attempted forcible rape, sexual penetration by foreign object by force, sexual battery by restraint and a sentencing enhancement of having a prior felony sex conviction for rape by intoxication in 1999, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
