BEND, Ore. -- The man who gained fame as the world's first man to give birth, has split from his wife of nine years.
Thomas Beatie began life as a woman and legally switched to a male identity, while preserving his female reproductive organs.
His wife, Nancy, had two children from a previous marriage but was no longer able to get pregnant following a hysterectomy.
But after 9 years, Beatie says the couple has split.
Beatie revealed the breakup during a taping of the syndicated TV show The Doctors.
Beatie appeared on the show to discuss having undergone his final female-to-male gender reassignment surgery.
"Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and were going through a rough patch right now. At the moment, were separated."
Beatie who was born a woman named Tracy had a sex change operation in Hawaii.
He gained world wide attention in 2008 when he revealed that he had become perhaps the first legally transgender male to get pregnant.
A photo of the bearded Beatie with a pregnant belly became a sensation.
Just months after he gave birth to a daughter, Beatie told ABC's Barbara Walters he was pregnant again.
in 2009 Beatie and wife Nancy welcomed their second child, a healthy boy.
Sources tell ABC it was a "natural childbirth" and that Nancy will nurse their son, as she did with daughter Susan.
