BEND, Ore. -- The man who gained fame as the world's first man to give birth, has split from his wife of nine years.

Thomas Beatie began life as a woman and legally switched to a male identity, while preserving his female reproductive organs.

He made headlines in 2007 after pictures of his bearded face and pregnant belly became public.

His wife, Nancy, had two children from a previous marriage but was no longer able to get pregnant following a hysterectomy.

But after 9 years, Beatie says the couple has split.

Beatie revealed the breakup during a taping of the syndicated TV show The Doctors.

Beatie appeared on the show to discuss having undergone his final female-to-male gender reassignment surgery.

"Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and we’re going through a rough patch right now. At the moment, we’re separated."

Beatie who was born a woman named Tracy had a sex change operation in Hawaii.

He gained world wide attention in 2008 when he revealed that he had become perhaps the first legally transgender male to get pregnant.

A photo of the bearded Beatie with a pregnant belly became a sensation.

Just months after he gave birth to a daughter, Beatie told ABC's Barbara Walters he was pregnant again.

in 2009 Beatie and wife Nancy welcomed their second child, a healthy boy.

Sources tell ABC it was a "natural childbirth" and that Nancy will nurse their son, as she did with daughter Susan.
