MALIBU -- The coroner's office has identified a skeleton found last Sunday near a car in Malibu as that of a man from Ventura County who disappeared in 2006.
Dental X-rays were used Wednesday to identify the remains of Jeffrey Howard, 42, of Thousand Oaks, said Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Joe Bale.
The cause of death has not been officially determined, but foul play is not suspected.
Hikers found his body last weekend near a car approximately 800 feet down a large chasm below the heavily traveled Kanan Dume Road between Malibu and Agoura Hills.
According to National Park Service Ranger James Herbaught, the car was heavily covered with brush, making it invisible to helicopters that typically patrol the area for fallen vehicles.
"It was a completely random chance that something glinted from the sun and they climbed up to investigate," Herbaught said.
Los Angeles County Coroner's investigators removed the skeleton and packed it in a cardboard box, which was helicoptered out of the canyon.
