LOS FELIZ, Calif. (KTLA) -- New details are being released about the "Sons of Anarchy" actor who investigators believe killed his elderly landlady before falling to his death Wednesday.

Investigators say Johnny Lewis brutally beat to death his 81-year-old landlady Catherine Davis, and dismembered her cat.

Lewis, 28, then fell to his death in the driveway of a Lowry Avenue home in Los Feliz.

Police were sent to the scene after receiving several 911 calls from neighbors who reported hearing a woman screaming.

When officers arrived, they found Lewis dead on the driveway of the residence.

They went inside the home and found the body of Catherine Davis on the second floor of the three-level house with her dead cat nearby in a "gruesome scene," police said.

Davis died from "blunt head trauma and strangulation," according to preliminary findings from the autopsy conducted Thursday, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office said.

Investigators believe that Lewis beat Davis to death, and then ran outside, where he got into a fight with a neighbor and his handyman.

Lewis then ran back into the three-story home and either jumped or fell from a roof or balcony, according to police.

Police suspect drugs were involved, but "we don't have any hard evidence that says he was on anything right now," LAPD Commander Andrew Smith said.

Authorities are awaiting toxicology results in the case and say it could be weeks before they understand the cause of what police say was a violent rampage by Lewis.

Davis, who lived in the home for decades, "typically rented to people in the movie industry, writers and actors, and they would come up here because it's a wonderful, quiet neighborhood," Smith said.

David Thoresen, who has serviced the home's garden fountain for five years, said Davis was a small woman, standing no more than 5-feet, 3-inches tall.

"She was the happiest, nicest lady I ever met in my life," Thoresen said. "I loved Kathy."

It's possible that Lewis was a current or former tenant, though the exact nature of their relationship was not immediately clear.

The house "appeared to have been ransacked," with furniture broken, he said.

Lewis had numerous brushes with the law including an arrest this year for punching a man and an arrest for burglary.

TMZ reports Lewis had ties to the Church of Scientology's substance treatment program.

An attorney who represented Lewis said he believed a drug treatment program was helping.

Lewis served nearly six months of a year sentence. He was released from jail on September 21st just five days before his death.

According to, Lewis has appeared in various film and TV projects -- most recently, "Sons of Anarchy," where he played prospect biker Kip "Half-Sack" Epps in the first two seasons.

His character was killed in the finale of season two.

He appeared on "The OC" as one of Marissa Cooper's new friends from Newport Union High, and he had one-off roles on "Criminal Minds," "Bones" and "CSI."
