RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) -- A horse was killed, and its owner was hospitalized, after a swarm of bees attacked them in Riverside.

It happened in the Arlanza neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

The horse's owner was treated for numerous bee stings at an emergency room.

He asked hospital officials to send someone to check on his horse.

Riverside County Animal Services officers discovered that the animal had died from bee stings.

It's wasn't immediately known how many times the horse and the owner were stung.

Animal Services says the bees may have been bothered when the owner started spraying his horse with fly repellent. They swarmed out of two hives in the neigbhorhood.

Exterminators were called to get rid of the hives.
