Hemet Firefighters to Wear Bullet-proof Vests
City of Hemet Fire Department. (Hemet Fire Fighters Association)
Last year the department purchased 18 bullet-resistant vests after a rash of attacks on the department.
Though the police are often at many local emergency calls, the precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of all responders.
Each 5-pound vest costs about $600 and is only to be worn on calls involving civil unrest, destructive devices, or with the potential of shooting.
Fire crews will also have to wait for police to clear a scene before moving in to treat patients.
Riverside County firefighters also wear bullet-proof vests.
