Griffin O'Neal Sentenced to Prison for DUI and Weapons Possession

O'Neal, 47, pleaded guilty to drunk driving and weapons possession in connection with an auto accident that injured another driver last year.
O'Neal is a resident of northern San Diego County. According to prosecutors, he had cocaine, marijuana, Xanax and amphetamines in his system when the accident occurred in August. He also had a handgun and shotgun in his possession -- and he was on probation at the time for a drunk driving conviction from 2007.
O'Neal was sentenced to 16 months in prison in San Diego County Superior Court.
He missed an earlier sentencing hearing after enrolling in an alcohol treatment program.
O'Neal's attorney Heather Boxeth says her client had checked himself into a residential rehabilitation facility after his latest arrest for domestic violence on New Year's Eve.
He was charged with misdemeanor battery in that case.
In the DUI crash, O'Neal was charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts including driving under the influence causing injury, possession of a firearm by felon and possession of a controlled substance.
He was facing up to 4 years in prison.
O'Neal was on probation for a 2007 DUI conviction when the accident occurred last Aug. 2 about 1 p.m. near San Diego Safari Park.
Toxicology tests showed he had amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana and Xanax in his system at the time of the crash.
A loaded handgun and shotgun were found in O'Neal's car.
O'Neal claimed he was trying to come to the aid of his 26-year-old half-brother when he got behind the wheel the day of the accident.
Redmond O'Neal, son of Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, was arrested in Santa Monica the same day, after police found heroin in his car during a traffic stop. He has a lengthy history of drug problems.
O'Neal has appeared in several films, including "April Fool's Day," "Assault of the Killer Bimbos" and "Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College."
In the past, he has publicly discussed his family's tumultuous life, including his father's difficult marriage with his stepmother, the late icon Farrah Fawcett.
