Depardieu's travel companion and fellow actor, Edouard Baer, has released a statement on Depardieu's behalf, saying, "[Gerard] has prostate problems and it was very worrying and humiliating for him."
The incident occurred after the flight crew denied Depardieu entry to the bathroom during an Air France flight on Wednesday.
Baer claims he gave Depardieu a bottle to urinate in but it quickly overflowed. When he couldn't finish in the lavatory, he decided to finish on the floor.
The plane was forced to return to the gate while crews cleaned up the mess for about 2 hours.
Baer says Depardieu, 62, was "upset at this and offered to clean up the mess."
"He has prostate problems and it was very worrying and humiliating for him. He was also stone-cold sober at the time. This is not the way he usually behaves."
It's unclear whether Depardieu will face any charges in the incident.
