LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KTLA) -- One of the three tiger cubs born Aug. 6 at the Los Angeles Zoo has died, zoo officials said Tuesday.
Zoo staff discovered the dead cub Monday and an examination revealed it sustained "head trauma." How the cub suffered the trauma is not yet known, according to a news release issued by the zoo.
Lulu and her cubs are Sumatran tigers -- a species that is critically endangered because of habitat loss, poaching and conflict with human populations, zoo officials said. The tigers give birth to small young that rely on their mother for care and protection during their first year of life.
Zoo officials say every birth of the tigers is "not without risk" and the zoo takes precautions to help the cubs survive after birth.
